Northwestern University was established in 1851 to serve people in the Northwest Territory, an area that now embraces the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota. In 1853 the founders purchased a 379-acre tract of land on the shore of Lake Michigan 12 miles north of Chicago. The town that grew up around the University was named Evanston in honor of one of the University's founders, John Evans.
After completing its first building in 1855, Northwestern began classes that fall with 2 faculty members and 10 students. By 1900, the University had grown to include seven undergraduate and graduate schools with 2,700 students and an annual budget of more than $200,000.
Today, Northwestern is one the country's leading private research universities. The university was award over 500 million in research grants,
it has endowments of over 7.1 Billion. Approximately 17,500 full and part-time students are enrolled in the University's 12 colleges and schools, which are located on campuses in Evanston, Chicago and Doha, Qatar
Evanston Township High School
ETHS is one of the best high schools in the country-region States! There are over 250 courses offered including arts, sciences, 8 languages and technology. Over 75% graduate with the grade point average that insures the chance to attend college. Special Education has comprehensive diagnostic and special programs for students with a wide range of disabilities. The educational staff 12% have bachelor degrees 87% has their master degree and the student teacher ratio is 1-17. The facilities are fantastic. They include: a student-run television studio, a computer center with 210 microcomputers in 7 networked labs, onsite day care, auto repair and electronics lab to prepare students for positions in today's work force, computer-aided laser and robotics, Computer Electronic Music Lab, 2 indoor Swimming Pools, 15 gyms, a dance studio, indoor and outdoor tracks, stadium, tennis courts, soccer fields, and more. There are over 27 advance placement classes are available and 800 students, over half of the junior and senior students are enrolled in one of these classes. Testing put this school above the average through out the state for over 10 years
Early Evanston grew up around Northwestern University in the 1850's.
